l think it is strange that l can stop the sneezing, the watery eyes, and all the physical symptoms, but the mood swings remain.The mood swings are not around when it is not allergy season, and my Father and Brother notice this problem also.

Mental illness cited in asthma link to suicide
May 2008 (Reuters Health) - New research indicates that asthma is significantly linked to suicidal thoughts & suicide attempts, but after accounting for mental health conditions & smoking, the association is markedly weakened.
A number of studies have shown increased rates of suicidal ideation & suicide attempts among individuals with asthma & other respiratory diseases. Why this is so, however, has been unclear, according to the report in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology.
Common risk factors that may soften the association have often not been taken into account in prior studies, note Dr. Diana E. Clarke, from The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, & her associates.
Their current investigation involved an analysis of data from 5692 individuals drawn from a nationally representative sample of English-speaking adults.
Overall, 8.7 percent of subjects had suicidal ideation without actual attempts at some point in their lives & 4.2 percent of subjects had ideation with attempted suicide. The prevalence of asthma was 12.0 percent.
Many of the factors that correlated with suicidal ideation were the same as those seen with asthma, including younger age, being female, current smoking, nicotine dependence, major depression, & alcohol abuse.
Asthma was significantly associated with suicidal ideation with suicide attempts but not without attempts, the researchers found. The strength of the association, however, fell with adjustment for smoking, nicotine dependence, age, sex, & race & then again after accounting for depression, panic disorder & alcohol abuse.
Nonetheless, on final analysis, asthma remained significantly associated with suicidal ideation with suicide attempts, the report shows.
''More research is needed to further elucidate the mechanism of the remaining association between asthma & suicide attempts,'' the authors conclude. ''Modification of smoking behaviors & effective treatment of depression, anxiety, alcohol abuse, & possibly asthma r important suicide prevention strategies.''

Asthma Linked To Higher Suicidal Thoughts With Attempts


ScienceDaily (May 13, 2008) — Asthma is associated with higher suicidal thoughts with attempted suicide, but does not seem to be linked with suicidal thoughts without attempts, according to a new report.

Cigarette smoking & concurrent mental health conditions may independently account for significant proportions (but not all) of the association between asthma & suicidal thoughts with attempts noted Diana E. Clarke, MSc, PhD, The Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, Baltimore, & colleagues.

There is growing evidence of relationships between respiratory diseases & suicidal behaviors, but investigators say this is the first study to examine the association between asthma & suicidal thinking with & without attempts using a nationally representative sample of adults. They also note it is the first study to investigate the potential role of cigarette use & nicotine dependence in the association of asthma & suicidal behavior.

The study examined data on 5,692 individuals 18 years & older from the US National Comorbidity Survey Replication. Approximately 12 percent of the sample had a history of asthma. The estimates of lifetime prevalence for suicidal ideation without & with attempts & asthma were 8.7 percent, 4.2 percent & 12.0 percent, respectively, & occurred more frequently in women that men. Despite adjustments for cigarette smoking, concurrent mental health conditions & common sociodemographic factors, a statistically significant association remained between asthma & suicide thoughts & attempts.

Investigators suggest that asthma may be associated with the more severe form of suicidal behavior, but not the milder forms of suicidal thoughts without attempts.

“Researchers have speculated that the relationship between asthma & suicidal behaviors is possibly because of ensuing mood & anxiety that results from disability & discomfort associated with asthma, which can be a lifelong disease,” they note. “Individuals might have frequent thoughts of death with increasing severity solely because they have a potentially life-threatening illness.”

Although this was not a clinical study, the findings may indicate the need for referral to mental services if an individual has asthma & expresses suicidal thoughts.
