Hi l am an 18 year old male and have had allergies since l was about 7. Yesterday l went to a new general practitioner that one of my mom is friends recommended. (dr. Kouji Takase)l went into the clinic and signed a few papers then he gave me a shot for the allergies, a flu shot, prescribed me lodrane 24d, and gave me a bottle of 5mg Prednisome. One of my friends who just happends to have took this drug before for allergies told me that it made him suffersevere side-effects and he wished he never took it at all. That kinda scared me so l have not taken it yet. The doctor told me to take 8 on days 1-2, 6 on days 3-4, 4 on days 5-6, and 2 on days 7-21 all after breakfast. l just wanna know what are the side-effects of this drug and overall is this a good treatment for allergies?

Yes Prednisone is a GREAT allergy medication. And it also has some bad side effects for a lot of people.

Generally a doctor will give u prednisone if ur allergy trouble is acute (meaning just flared up & is really BAD) or really persistent (like u can not get rid of it)

The doctor gave u a DOSE PACK which means u take a bunch of it & then taper off. If anyone takes too much (like over a long period of time) predisone (a steroid manufactured by ur adrenal glands), u can end up with serious problems with ur body is ability to produce its own steriods. That is why they give u the dose pack . To avoid those awful problems) WHen l have taken Prednisone l usually get a huge high (feeling energetic & nervous) & then crash (can not stay awake). That is awful enough but there is also water weight gain ( l blow up like a balloon) & sleeplessness. BUT my allergy symptoms DISAPPEAR!

If ur doctor can get u over the hump of the allergy symtoms with the prednisone, the other allergy meds can kick in & then u wo not need anymore steroids like Prednisone.

l say go ahead with ur doctor is recommendation. It is rational & actually the preferred course of treatment these days. If this does not work for u this time, then the next time u r suffering terribly with ur allergies, tell the doctor that this combination of drugs did not work. There r other more ''old-fashioned'' things to try.

Prednisone is not a quote on quote cure for allergies. It is an anti-inflammatory. He most likely gave it to u because u r having acute symptoms of rhinitis or sinusitis. It is a short term solution. The symptoms while u r on it r fairly minimal, however u can be subject to behavioural changes & some other symptoms when coming off of it. It really does a good job of dealing with short term issues like this, if ur doctor prescribed it to you, take it. If u r concerned then talk to him about it.
