l had problems with constipation and alternating constipation and diarrhea.
l have not had any wheat products for a week and l have not had any gas of IBS problems since then.Could this mean l may be allergic to wheat or gluten?

Could be both, l have had this for many years & have learn what l can & can not have with the ''grain'' family. Most flour used in these types of products use or has gluten in them. Try to stay away from breads, & grains, cereals & other products u feel u could have an issue or attack like this later on.

Try locating rice made products or use rice flour in ur recipes.

l know its been hard to cut out those cakes & cookies l so dearly loved.. but one in a blue moon, l will eat just one, otherwise l stay away from what hurts.

it does not mean you're allergic. allergic usually means u absolutely can not eat it or u will get violently ill. u could just be intolerant.. which can make u uncomfortable with anything from rashes to belly aches, headaches to IBS. gluten is not good for any one & does not really have any good things going for it, so it is definitely not going to hurt anything by cutting it out of ur diet. make sure you're still getting whole grains though such as corn, wheat germ (the good part of wheat & what is usually cut out), rye, barley, & oats.

OK - first of all, go straight back to eating gluten - eat plenty - at least 5 slices of bread a day or the equivalent.

Then go to see ur doctor & ask to be tested for Coeliac Disease (or Celiac Sprue - it is the same thing). The tests r fairly straightforward (a blood test in the first instance), but the results will come through as negative if u r not eating plenty of gluten as ur gut will heal fairly quickly.

If u get a positive diagnosis u will need a gluten-free diet. This is a pain, but it is perfectly manageable, & need not be a burden - all fresh fruit, veg, meat etc r naturally gluten-free. There r also a lot more gluten-free products available commercially than there used to be - awareness is increasing all the time.

If u get a negative diagnosis then u can still see whether or not avoiding wheat and/or gluten helps, although it is still best to do this with medical supervision. (Being completely gluten-free is not easy to start with as gluten is a hidden ingredient in all sorts of things.)
